Nhan Dan Online – The Mekong Delta has recently shipped around 42,000 tonnes of rice abroad, lifting Vietnam’s total shipments, as of June 15, to 2.5 million tonnes in volume and US$1 billion in value, equaling the same period in 2013.
These figures were reported by the Southwest Stering Committee (SSC), which went on to say that Asia remained a major importer, accounting for 78% of the global total of exported rice—up 5% compared to the same period last year—followed by Europe, America, Africa, Oceania, and the Middle East.
According to SCC Permanent Deputy Head Nguyen Phong Quang, despite the recent difficulties in rice exports, the continued shipments are attributable to exporters’ efforts in boosting trade promotion activities in markets such the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Cuba, Africa, Russia, Timor Leste, Algeria, Hong Kong, Singapore, Haiti, Mexico and several South American countries.
The SSC also recommended that enterprises continue strengthening trade promotion to help Vietnamese rice access new markets, as well as taking a more active role in expanding rice material areas to produce high quality rice and ensure rice provision to partners, Quang noted.
The Mekong Delta, the country’s rice bowl, comprises 12 provinces and one centrally run city with a total area of 40,000 square kilometres and a combined population of 18 million.
From now until 2030, the region is expected to grow rice across an area of 1.8 million ha, more than half of which is for export. It is also striving to maintain an annual output of 24–25 million tonnes of rice.
